What's New?
October 9, 2008
We completed rebuilding and refinishing the two 16' Tuba offset chests and revised the rack boards so that the chests can be installed side-to-side instead of back-to-back as WurliTzer originally configured them. The next step will be to repair some minor damage on the Tuba pipes and then clean them before they are installed in the main chamber. We also started construction of the platform in the main chamber that will hold the Chrysoglott, but it can't be completed until the Tuba pipes are in place. Finally, we ordered 207 new stop tabs for the console from Hesco Incorporated.
We were privileged to host the 2008 Picnic of the Susquehanna Valley Theatre Organ Society on Sunday August 10th. The day was filled with good music, good food, and 32 great friends. We hope everyone had a good time despite the weather, which didn't cooperate and kept everyone indoors. Bob Hauf was kind enough to send us 86 pictures of the event, and you can see them in a slide show if you click here. Thanks Bob! The new stop rails and fallboard that Ken Crome made for us were stained and finished by the Backyard Woodshop, and are now installed in the console shell as seen in the picture below. The next steps in completing the console will be to 1) purchase stop action magnets and new stop tabs; 2) install new contacts and reinstall and adjust the keys, and 3) install the new pistons.
The sixteen 16' Tibias have been installed in the Solo Chamber on the two rebuilt offset chests. Many thanks to Scott Ellison and Rick Kepley who helped us lift these very heavy pipes into place. The picture below shows the 16' Tibias on the left and right sides of the Solo Chamber, flanking the 8' Tibias which are in front of the 16' Diaphones.
The revised specifications for Opus 501 were finalized on June 11th, and are posted on the Specs page! Our next step will be to submit the specifications to the various manufacturers of solid state relays and combination actions for pricing. Can you say "rece$$ion"?
Rick, Deb, and Ken at the Backyard Woodshop completed the restoration of the mahogany finish on the console in May, and did a magnificent job! We built a 6x6 foot platform for the console, and reassembled the pieces. Below is a timelapse picture of the console being reassembled. What you see took an entire day to complete!
